Portraits
Portraits are responses to an individual person in one way or another. Many concentrate on likeness (the visual appearance of the subject) paticularly the face, but they can also suggest other things. In portraits, I try to balance visual likeness with aspects of character, background (a person's circumstances or history), emotion and so on, to produce a more complete representation of the subject.
Because of this, source material must be carefully selected if the painting is to be authentic. By choice I do not pose my subjects (taking them as they are) and try to avoid situations where they might feel self-consious - opting instead for casual or covert photographs and video. Ideally subjects are off-guard (or distracted) and more naturally themselves.
